Our members come from all walks of life, each with their own personal or professional goals. London Athenians is perfect for you if you are looking to:

• Lead a team: Gain the presence and authority needed to inspire, guide, and run effective team updates as a new manager.

• Speak up in meetings: Build the confidence to share your ideas clearly and assertively in workplace discussions.

• Persuade & Pitch: Help sales and marketing professionals craft compelling pitches, negotiate, and influence clients or stakeholders.

• Practice English: Develop fluency, articulate complex thoughts, and polish public speaking skills in English as a second or third language.

• Prepare for a big occasion: Conquer nerves for upcoming events, like delivering a memorable wedding speech or toast.

Your Journey Starts Here: How It Works

We know taking the first step can feel daunting, so we’ve made the path as simple and pressure-free as possible:

1. Visit as a Guest (Free & Low Pressure)

The absolute best way to see what we're about is to simply come along and watch—no preparation required!

• What to expect: Sit back, enjoy the evening, and observe how a meeting runs.

• Your only task: At the start or end of the meeting, you’ll be invited to stand up, introduce yourself by name, and share why you decided to attend. It’s as easy as that—no prepared speeches required!

Visit the club, and others multiple times, to make sure it's the right fit for you. Ideally we'd like to join after you've made three visits as a guest.

2. Become a Member

Once you join, you gain full access to the Toastmasters system, speech pathways, functionary roles, and our supportive community including access to our mentor system.

3. Your First Speech: The Icebreaker

When you're ready, you’ll prepare your very first project: the Icebreaker Speech.

• 4 to 6 minutes talking about a topic you already know best: yourself!

• Notes allowed: There’s zero expectation of perfection. Using notes is completely fine!

• Constructive feedback: You’ll receive encouragement, practical tips, and a warm round of applause from an audience cheering you on.

 

What You’ll Gain & Experience As a Member

• Structured Pathways: Choose a learning pathway tailored to your specific goals (e.g., persuasive speaking, leadership, presentation mastery).

• Impromptu Speaking (Table Topics): Half of every meeting is dedicated to practicing quick thinking on your feet.

• Personal Mentoring: You’ll be paired with an experienced mentor for 4 weeks at a time to help guide your early steps, giving you the chance to rotate mentors or connect with one long-term.

• Leadership & Meeting Roles: Build confidence behind the scenes as Timekeeper, Grammarian, Toastmaster of the Evening, or even as part of our club executive team.

• Listening & Evaluation Skills: Learn how to give and receive constructive, actionable feedback.

• Competitions: Take part in our twice-yearly club speech and evaluation contests to challenge yourself further.

 

About Us & Meeting Details

Founded in 1994, London Athenians is one of London’s friendliest and most active public speaking clubs. We bring together over 50 members from diverse, multinational backgrounds.

Whether you're terrified of public speaking or just want to polish your presentation skills, everyone is welcome!

We meet every Tuesday evening from 19:00 to 21:30.

• Venue: The Culture Room, ARC West

• Address: Manbre Rd, London W6 9RH (Hammersmith)

Unlike most Toastmasters clubs that meet fortnightly, London Athenians meets every single week. That gives you double the opportunities to practice, speak, and grow for less than £20/month (billed semi-annually).
